WPIC 2010 Year in Review

A Message from the founders of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, Danielle Andrews Sunkel and Tracey Manailescu:

To borrow a line from Master Wordsmith, Charles Dickens: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." 

What a busy year we have had!  We've had disappointments, surprises, accomplishments and many proud moments.  We've been imitated, (but never duplicated) time and again.

2010 solidified our International reputation and focus of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. Students travelled from Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Hong Kong, St. Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica and many other places to join our classes and association.  There are now over 2900 WPIC certified Wedding Coordinators worldwide.

In February, we were invited to visit the County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland where we stayed in a different castle every night! We also attended a Wedding Show in Dublin. Read about our Irish Wedding Adventures here, where we profile the various castles (such as Crom Castle, Belle Isle, Lough Erne Golf Resort, the National Trust Properties, etc) and what they offer to couples who wish to wed or honeymoon in Fermanagh.

In March, we travelled to Bahamas to train and certify 46 people from the Bahamas Bridal Association, which included members from the outer islands, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the Wedding Coordinators at the Atlantis, Sheraton Nassau, Wyndham Cable Beach and British Colonial Hilton Resorts to name but a few.

In June, we were invited to train and certify all of the on-site Wedding Coordinators from Palace Resorts in Mexico.  We brought 10 WPIC Alumni with us to tour the resorts in the Mayan Riviera to see what they offer our clients.

All thoughout the year, our alumni were offered opportunities to visit Jamaica, Bahamas, Antigua, St. Lucia, and Mexico on various FAM trips arranged through our travel partners; Sandals Resorts, SuperClubs Breezes, Palace Resorts and Air Canada Vacations.

WPIC was sought out by the Media on numerous occasions to share our expertise and opinion for newspapers, bridal magazines and television shows.  We were also able to extend several Media opportunities to our members at WPICAlumni.

All throughout the year we ran full-page, national ads in Today's Bride and Weddingbells magazine, encouraging couples to seek WPIC certified Wedding Professionals.  To further publicize the accomplishments of our Alumni, we instituted The Wedding Planner of the Month, which publicly showcases and profiles a successful WPIC Wedding Coordinator at the beginning of each month.

During the summer we aquired and renovated new offices with more space to accommodate our growing number of support staff and to better & more efficiently support the members of WPICAlumni.  When we were finished the renovations in September, we of course had a party to warm the offices. 

During the year we spoke about Wedding and Destination Wedding Planning at the Wedding MBA Convention in Las Vegas, and several Wedding Shows.

We practised what we preach about Continued Learning and we attended wedding and event seminars and conferences in Grand Cayman, Ireland, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada and all over the USA (Las Vegas, New York, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach).

November 1-5, 2010 we held our 6th annual Wedding Professionals Conference in The Bahamas to much Media Acclaim.  Our keynote speaker was none other then Colin Cowie.

The other fine speakers included: Mary Dann-McNamee, duo Jung Lee & Josh Brooks, Tom Haibeck, Peter Merry, Andy Ebon, Richard Emanuelle and Megan Cole-Karagory. 

Esteemed sponsors included Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine, WedLock Magazine and The Bahamas Tourism Board to name a few.

In order to get ready for 2011, we refreshed and rebranded the look of WPIC with our new logo, added a Facebook fan page and dedicated time each day to uphold our Twitter presence.  We will continue to update this Blog at least every Monday and Thursday, and more often if we have interesting news that just can't wait ;)  Just as we are rebranding and energizing the look of WPIC, we will be putting our energies into refreshing the inner workings of WPIC and helping our Alumni be the best they can be.

2011 is going to be an amazing year for WPIC!

With so many amazing speakers at the top of the industry, and attendees from all over North America, this conference is great for any Wedding Professional, but the added bonus of going to four different venues and hopping on a plane for a Wedding Tour of Out-Islands is a Destination Wedding Planners dream!

IncentiveWorks 2010

Who knew that a trade show targeted at Meeting Managers would be so valuable for Wedding Planners?  I certainly didn't when I registered.  The only reason I registered for IncentiveWorks is because I have been working as a Meeting Planner for the past few years (weddings is a new direction for me). 

So, early on the morning of Tuesday, August 18th I went to my first workshop at IncentiveWorks. Great workshop, but I was still wondering if I should even be there.  Then… I saw 2 familiar faces walking ahead of me. It was Danielle & Tracey!  

I was so excited to see them; I forgot their names for a moment!  But, I am so glad I spoke to them because I left our conversation feeling very encouraged and pumped to visit the rest of the event. They let me know I was definitely in the right place and it would be great for developing my business. So, I'm going to share some highlights with all of you.

First, I must mention an amazing keynote speaker - Simon Sinek - who spoke on Tuesday morning.  Session topic - “Start with Why?” As I walked into the auditorium, I wondered, “Why What?”  I left thinking, “Oh Wow!”  Here's the gist of his presentation.  We need to find out why we do what we do - right from our core - in order to then figure out how we do it, and what exactly we will do (our “product” so to speak).  So, in context relevant to us, why have we chosen to work in the wedding industry as planners, decorators, etc.?  Why do we put so much time, energy and love into our careers? If you really sit and take a moment to think about it, the answer isn't really that easy.  So, there's your homework…why?  If you'd like more information on Simon and his message, visit www.startwithwhy.com 

The second day of Education sessions another amazing keynote speaker -  Gary Vaynerchuk  - brought down the house with his hilarious and down-to-earth presentation about the way Social Media has changed the way we must market ourselves.  

Décor Trends: We are seeing a lot of leopard print accents; purples, reds, mixing metallics; the roaring twenties, the 50's, pinups, boudoir photo shoots (great for bachelorette parties); lots of bling!  Designing Trendz was showcasing their new mini pancake maker!

Destinations:  Many resorts and tourism boards were present, which provided great contacts for Destination Wedding Planners including several WPIC friends and Partners such as:

Venues: There were several great venues from all over Canada at the trade show, who were really excited to find out that there were also Wedding Planners in the crowd. Some venues in Toronto that stood out to me are:

The Fifth (formerly Easy on the Fifth) in downtown Toronto. With its rooftop terrace, and several different private rooms, you can get really creative using the space.

Bram & Bluma Appel Salon - who would ever think of going to the Toronto Reference Library for an event? They recently (in the last few years) opened a great event space that is definitely worth checking out.

Berkley Church - what a cool venue, that allows you to byob. And, for small events of about 10 guests there is a tree house that overlooks Taddle Creek.

As of now, I'm just compiling a list of all the venues I really liked, with contact names. The three I've listed are not even the tip of the iceberg! It may take a few weeks to finish, but I'll be happy to share it with anyone interested.

So, if you have not been to IncentiveWorks I strongly recommend checking it out next year. It's great not only for building relationships with vendors, but the workshops are very much worth your while.

WPIC "Breezes" Through Jamaica

Wow! What an amazing FAM (familiarization) trip to Jamaica visiting the Superclubs resorts. From the minute we got off the plane, we felt at home.  Jamaicans are incredibly friendly to begin with, but the staff at the comfortable and cool SuperClubs Lounge at the airport, to the Staff at the resorts, it was like arriving home.  We visited the Breezes Grand Resort and Spa, Breezes Trelawny, Breezes Runaway Bay and Breezes Rio Bueno. We even stopped in at the more risqué Hedonism II.

Escorted by the ever-so-gracious Superclubs Sales Manager for Groups, Steve Koth, and lead by WPIC Director, Lindsay Mogford; Renee Richards, Sandy Stirling, Natalie Faria, Lindsay Laur and myself, began our 5 days of site visits of the gorgeous Breezes Resorts.

We started our journey off with a 2-hour bus ride to the Breezes Grand Resort and Spa, which felt more like 1 hour thanks to the beautiful Caribbean Coast we drove along and lovely townships we passed through.  Our bus driver, which was the norm with all our bus drivers, was amazing and we quickly learned that the term “Ya Mon”, was going to be imprinted in our vocabulary for days to come.

Upon arriving at each of the resorts, we were welcomed by refreshing cool towelettes and wonderful Fruity cocktail’s. The resorts were impeccably clean and ALL the staff greeted us, as we would pass them.  That truly made the biggest difference. There is nothing like great service to take the experience to the next level.  

The first two nights we stayed at the Breezes Grand Resort & Spa in Negril, and were we ever treated like Stars. We not only were surprised with a Chilling Bottle of Champagne and Delicious homemade Chocolate Truffles in our Suites the first evening, but they had also reserved their best tables for us for our dinners and arranged a Glass Bottom boat tour for us on Day 2. We all made a point of enjoying the Beach at least a couple of times during our visit and enjoyed the glistening fluffy sand and the warmest, bluest and cleanest water I’ve seen. Director of Sales, Kenroy Calame, was by our sides’ day in and day out making sure we had everything we needed and that all our questions were answered.

The site visits were always detailed and thorough at all the resorts and covered everything we could think of to make our clients Weddings sheer perfection.

As we toured the gorgeous suites, we first noticed the wonderful designs of the towels on the bed, from swans and hearts to sea fans and conch shells. All were adorned with tropical flowers – truly an art form.  Each resort had it’s own ‘theme’ and uniqueness. Breezes Grand Spa & Resort had Hot Tub Suites while Runaway Bay had Plunge Pools.

All the resorts we viewed had many stunning ceremony sites that were set-up for us and even got to ‘witness’ a couple of ‘real’ weddings. The décor set-ups from Ceremony, Reception, Cake Tables and hors d'oeuvres & Champagne Stations were gorgeous. It was easy to see that Breezes takes great pride in what they do and go out of their way to ensure that their Couples get exactly what they envision. The possibilities are endless.

During one of our site visits, we met a young woman whose sister had just gotten married at the Breezes Grand Resort and Spa. She could not stop raving about the experience and how organized the Staff was to make the wedding flawless; but what truly stood out to her were the Photographer and the Photos. She told us that the pictures were immaculate and unique. I should mention that all the Photographers for Superclubs are fully trained and extremely talented individuals, however, if you still have a preference of bringing your own photographer, you are welcome to, at a surcharge. 

The Reception Facilities throughout the resorts were great and capable of accommodating anywhere from a small intimate party of two to a large group upwards of a couple hundred. The dining options and menus are extensive and almost everything can be customized, not to mention that the reception can be held anywhere on the resort be it Beachfront, Poolside, Oceanside or elsewhere. If you can imagine it, I guarantee the Breezes Staff will do anything and everything in their power to make it happen and then some.

We were lucky enough to experience the cuisine at all the restaurants, from the casual Reggae Café, Gran Terraza and Victoria Market Buffets, casual elegance at Munasan Japanese to the upscale Italian: Pastafari (or La Pasta) and French: Piacere. ALL the food was mouth-watering. My personal favorites were the Italian and French; although being a Paris and Venice die-hard makes me biased.

Every evening, we would meet our hosts at the Piano Bar for Cocktails and conversation. The entertainment varied nightly at each resort. At Breezes Grand Resort and Spa we enjoyed watching a fire-eater & a man who could balance absolutely anything on his head, including a beach lounger. Needless to say we left in awe. Hedonism II had us singing Sweet Caroline and Red Red Wine for days on end; The incredible dinner and conversation at Runaway Bay with Franklyn Eaton - General Manager, Amoi Leon - Director of Sales, Shane Beeker - Sales Coordinator and Patricia Clarke - Wedding Coordinator, stimulated our senses. So much so that we completely forgot about going out to catch the shows and dancing that even the locals come over to enjoy. Rio Bueno had us singing and dancing all night with Tamika Higgins - Director of Sales and Sheryl McKoy Thompson - Wedding Coordinator, followed by a Pajama Party and late night Pizza to keep us smiling. However, the ultimate entertainment came the first night in Negril when our very own, Renee Richards won the grand prize by going through a series of challenges dreamt up by the hilarious MC.  

 The ultimate fulfillment came to us in the form of children the day before we left. Organized by Breezes Rio Bueno’s Public Relations Director, Burchell Henry, we took a bus to one of the Early Childhood Education Schools, where we met some of the sweetest and most beautiful children. We were honoured to gift the children new Books, Candy, Clothing and school items like Playdoh, Stickers and Pencils, and they showered us with big smiles, laughter and many, many hugs.  Jamaica, although a beautiful Island, has pockets of poverty.   Superclubs have put their humanitarian foot forward to help the less fortunate. Burchell Henry has made it his mission to help provide to Nursing Homes, Pediatric Hospital units and Schools. I can speak for the whole WPIC group in saying it was the most humbling experience we’ve ever had.

Overall, our five days of truly getting to know the resorts, their staff, each other and having an amazing leader in Steve Koth direct our visit, was nothing short of fabulous. From the remarkable beaches at Breezes Grand Resort and Spa in Negril, the All Ages fun-filled resort at Breezes Trelawny complete with a Circus School and Waterpark; the Awesome infinity pool, 18-hole Golf Course and Plunge Pools at Runaway Bay; the  9-Whole Golf Course, beautiful Oceanside Pool, and Plantation themed Breezes Rio Bueno; and the Blue Mahoe Spa and 24-hour Gym facilities at all the properties; I would not only recommend Superclubs, I am already planning my own vacation.

WPIC- 2009 Year in Review

Wow, what a year we have had!

The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada and its Association WPICAlumni is over 500 people stronger this year.  Alumni have travelled from Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, Japan, China and Hong Kong to take our course in 2009.

Over 130 of our Alumni have had the opportunity to experience Wedding Destinations such as Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos and the Philippines this year.  Some were even treated to Private Plane transportation!

WPIC certified all the Jamaican Sandals, Beaches and Grand Pineapple staff.

We established and grew our partnerships with our fantastic travel partners:  Sandals and the lovely, Gina Tsirmpas; SuperClubs and the wonderful, Steve Koth; Air Canada Vacations and the darling, Debbie Cotton-Burinski; and The Bahamas Tourism Board and the fantastic, Vinincia Strachan, WPICC.  We owe so much to our amazing contacts at each of these companies!

The media has referred to us on many occasions, we have been interviewed on Canada AM twice this year, On the Line twice, Entertainment Tonight Canada and in Today’s Bride, Chatelaine, The National Post (multiple times), The Globe & Mail (multiple), and every single city newspaper in the Sun Media Group (multiple times) as well as many other publications in print and on-line.

Our President and Vice President spoke at the Wedding MBA in Las Vegas in September and Instructor, Tara Murney, spoke to AfWPI members in California.

We’ve “Trashed the Dress” in Jamaica, The Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, the Philippines and of course, Toronto.

We just got back from our best conference to date, the 5^th Annual Wedding Professionals Conference held at the fabulous Beaches Turks & Caicos.  We had Sasha Souza, Joanne Brown, Andy Ebon and Simon & Ciara Daykin speak to us there.

Our Alumni have grown their businesses leaps and bounds, have received several top Industry Awards, been appointed the executive of Industry Associations and interviewed, quoted and featured in many Wedding and mass media publications.  We couldn’t be prouder of all our “Wedding Superstars”!

Year-end is a time to re-evaluate and set newer and bigger goals and we definitely have. 

Some the things on WPIC’s 2010 Agenda include trips to Ireland, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico and Barbados.  We will continue to offer the Annual Wedding Professionals Conference in a sunny locale.  We have started a new partnership with a very large travel company and will be certifying over 400 of their agents as Destination Wedding Specialists.  Most importantly, we will continue to produce the best educated, informed and ethical Certified Professional Wedding Coordinators.

Wedding Photography Tips from The Bahamas

While we were in The Bahamas for the WPIC FAM trip, we had the opportunity to meet some wonderful local vendors. One person that really stood out to us, was Nassau-based Photographer, Dominic Duncombe from Dominic Duncombe Photography.  What a knowledgeable and dynamic person to send your clients to.

 

 
Here, Dominic Duncombe shares some great tips about Photography:

 

"Weddings are a great way to create photos that people will treasure. I learn at least two things every time I shoot a wedding and have a great time doing so."

 

Brides & Groom's

1.  Practicing putting on rings in the following manner:
a. Hold from underneath
b. Reach underneath your lover's hand and hold their wrist with your free hand
c. Slide the ring onto their finger
d. Hold their fingers together under the ring
e. Doing this will save you some "How do I do this?" anxiety, make your hands look great and give the photographer lots of time to get photos

2. Look at your smile in the mirror
a. A small smirk works better than a grin, especially when you are hot and tired and trying to get through the tenth group photo still looking like the world's most fabulous couple. Seeing the difference helps so use the mirror.

Bride's  Checklist
1.  Hold your bouquet at or below your bellybutton. The temptation is to hold it too high.
2.  Removing a veil may affect your hairstyle
3.  Anything that can wave can block your face. Leaving your hair down or having a veil on a windy day will mean that some photos are unusable.
4.  Blonde hair dye + Chlorine-filled pool water = GREEN HAIR
5.  Consider how your tan lines will look in your wedding dress

Groom's Checklist
1.  Relax and have a great time. The tension of the big day and being on camera is a lot to handle. Fun is not the word that comes to mind. Still, here are two things that go a long way to making it fun:
a. Think of the photos as an investment. A few minutes and a good attitude can turn into a photo that stays in your wallet for years.
b.  Concentrate on her. Think about the reasons you fell in love with her.  Remember your favourite date (or how it ended). It will show on your face and you won't have to fake a smile.

The key to easy Group Photos
1.  Make a list of the number of group photos you want before hand and who will be in each
2. Share the list with the photographer and discuss the best time and
    location for your group photos
3. Remember to consider guests with health or mobility issues
4. Work from the largest group to the smallest and insist that people who are not going to be in any more photos leave. They usually slow down the process and make the people being photographed uncomfortable.
5. Some tips for easy, timeless group photos
a. Consider the timing and location carefully. The best time is probably right after the ceremony outside the church or outside the reception site. That way you are already moving everyone around. The timing should ensure that everyone still looks their best.
b. Make a list, give it to the photographer and stick to it. Yes weddings are a great time to get shots of the relatives that never visit but save some of your energy for the portraits.

Information and items to give to your photographer
1. Give the photographer a clear idea of what is important to you, especially in the following areas:
a.  Décor
b.  Your cake
c.  Your Locations
d.  Sentimental items (A chair reserved for someone who could not be there)
e.  If possible email photos or examples to the photographer.

2. Send the photographer and itinerary with the following info
f.  Locations and what time of day (or at least order) you expect to be in those locations

g. Special events (fire dancer, a song from a guest)

h. Items for the photographer
i. Invitations and other stationary (mail ahead of time if possible)
j. Toys, keepsakes, gifts (Set aside one of each for photos. Afterwards then can be used as intended)

Consultant's checklist
1.  Establish a safe zone and keep unwanted people out of the photo zones.
2.  Ask guests not to stand during the ceremony to take photos
3.  Keep the photographer informed
a.  Before cutting the cake, first dances

Wedding Photography in The Bahamas

There are two things to remember about Bahamian weather:
1. It's hotter than you think
2. It's hotter than that

If it is not overcast or windy it will be hot as the sun never goes away.  The heat is difficult for guests, especially if they are sitting in the sun, waiting on a bride. This is worse for people with age or health considerations. To address this, try to have an area where guests and vendors can wait in the shade before the ceremony starts. You may also want to provide fans or bottled water.

Photographs in the heat
1. Sand + heat = exhaustion
a. Multiply by a tuxedo and a wedding dress and you get aggression or at least impatience
2. Make sure you can find shade, either in a location or carry an umbrella
3. Shoot groups separately while the bride and groom cool off, fix make-up
4. Bring the couple in to do their photos last
5. Know what group shots there are or, more likely, have a time limit

Time of day
1. Check the sunset time
a. It becomes too dark to shoot about 30-40 minutes before the actual
listed time

Rain
1. The Bahamas can have sudden, heavy showers that last a minute, just long enough to soak every inch of preparation
2.  Less often, we have more steady rain, often the case as the temperature changes from hot to cold or vice versa.
3.It is wetter in the summer than in the winter. Read more here:  BBC chart of average Bahamas weather
4. In my experience, if the bride is willing to stay in it, my equipment is safe. There have been a few close calls but not many. Once there is somewhere dry where vendors may retreat then usually rain is doable, if challenging.

Why megapixels are only half the story
Pixels per inch (ppi) or Dots per inch (dpi) of final images matter more than knowing the megapixel number. Images should be at least 200dpi and are often higher, depending on if and how much the image was cropped.

Dominic started shooting professionally in 1996 at The Tribune Newspaper, a daily newspaper in The Bahamas. After earning an Associate's Degree in Photography from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale he worked as a freelance writer and photographer.  He served as head photographer and a senior reporter at The Tribune from 2002-2004. He has been photographing weddings since 2004.

WPIC Goes to The Bahamas...

WPIC Inc. would like to thank, Vinincia Strachan, Regional Manager ( and a WPIC graduate) from "The Bahamas Tourism Office" for inviting 10 WPIC graduates to view  beautiful wedding venues.

On October 19th-23rd, we were whisked away with "Air Canada Vacations" (thanks to Debbie Cotton-Burinski) to the beautiful islands of The Bahamas!

We stepped off of the plane, to be greeted over the P.A system with a special welcome to the WPIC FAM trip :) How special is that?!?!?!

We were then shuttled off to our host hotel, "Breezes Bahamas", with special thanks to Steve Koth, our SuperClubs representative.

We had busy, fun-filled days viewing resorts, restaurants and even travelling by private plane to Bimini Bay (an outer island)! All that and still time to shop in the Straw Market, too :)

The properties that we viewed were Marley Resort & Spa, Sheraton Cable Beach Resort, Wyndham Nassau Resort &Crystal Palace Casino, The British Colonial Hilton, GrayCliff Hotel & Restaurant (we had the most delicious lunch here), The Balmoral Club, Bimini Bay Resort, "The Poop Deck" for a yummy dinner, Harry's Haven, and  Atlantis for a half day of training seminars with local wedding vendors.

SuperClubs 'Rocks' the Berkeley!

On August 27th, 2009 WPIC Association members had a fabulous SuperClubs training night at The Berkeley Heritage Events Venue.

Two representatives from SuperClubs, taught 47 WPIC Alumni about their beautiful properties in the Caribbean. 

A PowerPoint presentation with information kits, along with the most entertaining 3 hrs. of information from our fabulous representatives, Tamika Higgins (Sales Manager from Grand Lido Braco) and Steve Koth (Sales Manager Groups & Incentives) made it worth every minute!

For those five of us who were just there in June, we began missing the Jamaica FAM trip all over again :(

WPIC Alumni began arriving at 6 p.m and were greeted with delicious Jamaican inspired hors d'oeuvres and beverages from The Berkeley's in house, Desoto Catering. 

There were jerk chicken skewers with droppers of coconut milk, salmon skewers, oxtail pate on crackers and the Executive Chef's signature risotto balls, along with "Jamaica juice" (Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk) and wine available.

We were given a tour of The Berkeley and were able to see all that it has to offer to our clients.  My personal favourite was the "Treehouse", where a couple can have an intimate dinner right in the middle of downtown Toronto.  Decor and venue were sponsored by The Berkeley Heritage Events Venue.

At the end of the presentation, SuperClubs gave away a trip for 3 nights to Grand Lido Braco!!!
